Patten School has a unique approach to discipline that is nearly diabolical in nature. Instead of different punishments for different crimes, all punishments are the same. This simplifies discipline considerably. Any offense merits a simple mark in a book. At the end of each day, girls with marks line up outside the Punishment Room and wait for their turn.

The actual punishment is also simple. It consists of a slender ash rod of approximately a meter in length which is delivered at high velocity across the bare buttocks of the delinquent. This strike of wood against flesh causes an intense but transitory agony, and it leaves a swollen mark of a purplish color across the target. A stripe stings intensely for a minute or two, then reduces to a profound throb for several hours. The area is tender for a day or two, and trace of the mark might be visible for as long as a week, though there is minimal pain after the initial application.

Because of the equal opportunity approach to discipline favored by Patten School, this punishment is precisely the same for all students, regardless of age, physical characteristics, or behavior. A mark means punishment, and all punishments are identical.

There is only one catch. It is a subtle detail, but it is significant. The idea for punishment, of course, is that it be a deterrent. Thus repeated misbehavior is considered far worse than any single offense. At the beginning of the school year, all students start off with a clean slate. But for each mark a girl receives throughout the school year, the number of strikes in her punishment increases.

Thus a girl's first offense earns only a single slice of the rod. Stingy, but merely a warning. A second mark, earned perhaps a month later, merits two strokes of the cane. A third mark means three, four four, and so on.

Now three hard strokes of a whippy rod across the bottom is not pleasant, but it is bearable. Four or five is uncomfortable, and six is difficult to endure. More than six is extremely undesirable, and once you get into the rarified air of double digits, the agony is unspeakable. Thus most students are intelligent enough to realize that a few marks during a school year isn't too bad, but more than that gets one into seriously unpleasant territory and should be avoided. And that is the school's key to motivating good behavior.

Unfortunately, not all girls have such foresight, and a few are rebellious, stubborn, or just plain stupid. Some are merely foolish. For instance, younger girls, new to the school and the system, are often brazen in their misbehavior because they believe that a mild thrashing of a few strokes is a worthy price. With a nearly clean slate, the punishment seems so minor a girl might be tempted to sneak a boy onto campus or skip a class or cheat on an exam. After all, the punishment is the same regardless of the crime.

However, these fools fail to remember that a year is a long time to be on perfect behavior. What seems a lark at the beginning of the year slowly adds up and later in the year suddenly the girl's tally is significant. Now the girl is in the uncomfortable situation where the slightest mistake earns her not a mild stroke or two punishment, but a painful six or seven or nine or even more.

This is perhaps best illustrated with an example. Let's look at a young lady named Carly from a few years back. She arrived at Patten School a fresh-faced fourteen-year-old with a blossoming woman's body and an adolescent's confused mind. At first she was frightened of punishment, for even a single stroke of the cane sounded quite hideous, yet after experiencing it, as every girl inevitably does, she decided it wasn't so bad. Awful at the time, of course, but the pain quickly fades and young people tend to have short memories for unpleasant things.

Thus Carly began to deliberately misbehave. I don't mean she was indiscriminate in her choices: no, she was careful to make her crimes worthy of the consequences. One Friday she disappeared, leaving campus to "hang out" with a boy, knowing full well that upon her return she'd face the cane. But this was only her third mark of the season and she bravely took her three stings with a smirk. A month later she was back for four, having been caught with a cigarette. Three weeks after that it was a smarting five for being up after lights out. Just after Christmas she earned her first sixer, the offense being one of "lewd conduct" (for her sake I won't say more).

It was a few weeks later, after her seven for turning in a plagiarized essay, that I think her smirk started to fade. That was when she began to realize her predicament. She was now in "serious" territory, and whereas at the beginning of the year her crimes were grave and the consequences mild, now it was the reverse. As she struggled to be good, she found it challenging, and every few weeks it seemed, no matter how hard she tried, something slipped up and she received another mark. By the end of the term she she had to endure a full baker's dozen for the outrageous crime of being a mere twenty-three seconds late to math!

Put yourself in Carly's shoes and imagine how those last months of the year must have felt. Patten School is strict and the slightest offense would get her put down in the book. Failure to complete a homework assignment, running in the halls, outside without a permission slip, even talking out of turn in a class would earn her another mark and fearsome punishment. Is it no wonder that the girl was a veritable angel?

But the system is designed so that even an angel cannot escape the occasional mark. While punishment is never given undeserved, it can be given for seemingly trivial things. I knew a girl once who received nine strokes for passing a note in class. Another suffered eleven for forgetting to sign her name on her test, receiving a zero and thus earning a black mark and a punishment. The record must be a blonde named Stacy who was an extremely foolish girl and reached double digits by Christmas. The last half of the year was pure misery for her, and at the end of the semester I remember she was beaten a solid nineteen for the crime of arriving at class without a pencil!

Such is the way of things at Patten School. It is an extremely effective system. It is also utterly fair. A girl in over her head has no one to blame but herself and she knows it. I could not tell you the number of times I saw a freshman foolishly chalk up punishments in the first half of the year only to regret it in the second, and then when she returns as a sophomore, be as good as gold and finish the year with only a handful of marks to her name. To me that is a success: a girl going from a dozen marks one year to just three or four the next? That's deterrence!

It can be a hard lesson for a girl to learn, but like most things in life, when a girl learns it the hard way she remembers it forever. The school has received many letters from alumni who've gone on to successful careers and families who have written to say that they credit Patten School's unique discipline system with their reformation.

"Before I came I was rebellious and naughty," wrote one woman. "I wasn't necessarily a bad girl, but I was thoughtless and careless, and like many I foolishly thought I was 'beating the system' in my first few months, getting away with awful behavior, but I certainly paid for that later, and regreted it deeply. It is impossible to put into words the degree of dread I carried with me in the last months of my first year. I was absolutely terrified of further marks. I prayed and prayed for the end of the school to come so I could get back to a blessed 'clean slate.' In subsequent years I was careful from the start, and I must tell you that in changed my life. I went from an irresponsible brat to a composed, well-thought-out young lady. Patten School taught me self-control and self-discipline. Thank you, Patten School. I owe you everything."

That's just one letter; the school has an archive of hundreds more just like it. A few years ago there was some talk of perhaps revising the school's discipline system and the school received thousands of protests from alumni who did not want it to change.

"I love the system. Do not change a thing," wrote a recent graduate. "What makes it work is that it is fair. I'm not a fan of corporal punishment in general, mainly because its use is often irrational, inconsistent, and unfair. For example, at another school, a good girl might make one mistake in her entire four years, and yet she faces a terrible physical punishment of six or eight or even more strokes. Why should her punishment be so severe if that's her only offense? The way Patten School uses CP makes so much more sense: that same girl would only receive a single warning stroke, regardless of her crime. If it's a one-time mistake, that's it: she's paid her dues but it wasn't too severe. On the other hand, if she's consistently naughty, then the severity of the punishment increases accordingly, and it's her own fault. She's got no one to blame but herself. It's a brilliant system. Please, please don't change it. I want to send my daughter to Patten but only if you offer the same equal opportunity system of punishment."

After such an outcry of support, the talk of change quickly faded, and today the school has no plans to change its unique feature. There are many who feel that corporal punishment is a dated thing and should be abandoned, but the truth is that corporal punishment motivates like nothing else.

Would a girl radically change her behavior if threatened with a loss of privileges, detention, or lines? Of course not. Such punishments do not scale the way a physical punishment does. Is 1,000 lines ten times worse than 100? Is 10 hours detention ten times worse than one? Not really. In fact, more is often easier to endure, as the penitent becomes accustomed to the situation. If you go five weeks without being allowed to watch television a sixth is no big deal. Yet ten strokes with a cane is an order of magnitude worse than a single cut.

It is the slow build-up of a girl's punishment quota that teaches her the lesson. The higher her mark count, the more she thinks about her behavior. If the amount was simply set in advance based on the offense, the amount has no meaning. Knowing that a crime like skipping class merits six strokes, for instance, just causes a girl to think, "Well, I just won't skip class. What else can I get away with?" She may not be conscious of this thought process, but that's what is going on in her head. Under the Patten system, any bad behavior will earn her the same punishment -- thus she must rid herelf of _all_ bad behavior.

Adolescents are not exactly rational. It takes time for lessons to penetrate. That's why the Patten system works: the lesson is built-up and taught over a full school year. A girl has plenty of time to contemplate the consequences of her actions. Over the year she learns -- often the hard way -- that today's behavior effects tomorrow. What better lesson can there be?
